The Roman Villa

The Roman Villa One of the earliest sites giving detailed information about life in the area of Foxton is that of the remains of a Roman villa located between the villages of Foxton and Shepreth. Information revealed by archaeological excavation of the site tells us not only about the first occupant of the villa, believed to be a retired Roman official, but also about the destruction of the villa and its re-cycling for use by the local tribesmen after the murder of the Roman official and his family.

We know that the appearance of the villa would have been approximately as shown in the sketch above

We also know from archaæological evidence that the building was sacked and burned, and that a man and a woman, probably the occupants of the building, were killed and hurriedly buried on the site at about the same time.
