There were at least four tumuli in the parish, sadly all ploughed down now, and only visible from the air as cropmarks. Three were on the south side of West Hill and one near Orchard Farm on the Fowlmere Road. There may have been others and I just haven't noticed them on the aerial photographs available from the Cambridge University Committee for Aerial Photography, (now called the CU Unit for Landscape Modelling). A Resistivity survey confirmed the presence of a ring ditch for one of the tumuli, but failed to find any trace of another in 2004. If you are really interested in prehistoric barrows the County Council did a survey in 1998. Last modified: 05 April, 2006 |
